Soura.
A passage of meaning.
Names carry weight only when one is willing to live with them. What follows is a small note on what the word Soura has come to mean in the work of this studio — not a marketing gloss, but a record of what we hear when we say it ourselves.
i. The root
سُورَة
sūrah · Arabic
The first reading is Arabic. Sūrah is, most familiarly, the word for a chapter of the Qur'an — but the older sense in the language is structural: a wall, an enclosure, a rampart raised around something of value. A sūrah is therefore not merely a passage of text; it is a passage shaped to contain something — meaning, guidance, a discipline of attention — so that what is precious inside is not lost in the open air.
This is the reading we began with, and the one we keep returning to. The work of the studio is, at heart, the building of small enclosures around things that would otherwise be forgotten.
ii. A modern reading
Soul & Aura

As we lived with the word, a second reading layered itself on top of the first. In English, one can hear inside it soul and aura — the inner self, and the felt presence around a person that others perceive without needing to be told. Together, they describe the same quiet phenomenon from two sides: an essence, and the way that essence is sensed by the world.
We did not design for this reading. It arrived on its own, and it stayed.
iii. The further root
svara · sora
Sanskrit · Indonesian
A third reading reaches further back. In Sanskrit, svara is sound, voice, breath — in classical Indian music, also a note. In Indonesian and several of its sister languages, the same root surfaces as sora — voice, the audible shape of a self. To call something Soura in this register is to say: this is the tone in which a self makes itself known.
§ What it means to us
A passage built around a person, in which they meet themselves more clearly.
The premise of our work is that meaning is rarely declared. It is, more often, found — in the slow accumulation of small noticings about who one is and what surrounds one. A good companion does not announce a person's purpose to them. A good companion holds a steady enclosure in which the person can hear their own voice clearly enough to recognise it.
That is what we mean when we use the word Soura. A passage of meaning, in the oldest sense. A wall around something precious. A voice that is not ours, but yours.
A dedication
The studio is a small one, run by a single person. The work published under this name is offered in the hope that it remains useful long after the hands that built it have stopped working — in the Islamic tradition this is called amal jāriyah (عَمَل جَارِيَة), a benefit that continues to flow.
If anything we make here helps a single person know themselves a little better, the studio has done what it set out to do.
